Classification is a snapshot, not a guarantee

ISO 14644-1 sets airborne particle concentration limits by class and defines how many sample locations a room needs. A room can pass classification at rest and still fail to protect the process in operation, because classification says nothing about how quickly the room clears a contamination event.

Recovery testing answers the operational question

Recovery measures how long the room takes to return to its cleanliness class after a deliberate particle challenge. A room that classifies correctly but recovers slowly has an air change or air distribution problem that classification alone will not reveal.

Airflow visualisation shows what numbers cannot

Smoke studies reveal dead zones, unintended recirculation around equipment, and turbulence at critical work surfaces. Two rooms with identical air change rates can behave completely differently once benches, isolators and operators occupy the space.

Pressure integrity holds the whole scheme together

Cascade pressures between adjacent classified spaces prevent migration. Verification covers not just the steady-state differential but door-opening transients and the response of the control system when several doors open at once.
