Five Practical Ways to Reduce Chiller Plant Energy Consumption

23/06/2026

1. Raise chilled water supply temperature where the load allows

Every degree of raised supply temperature reduces compressor lift and improves efficiency. The limit is set by the dehumidification duty of the air side, so the change must be verified against space humidity rather than applied blindly.

2. Lower condenser water temperature when ambient permits

Cooling tower approach improves in cool, dry conditions. Fixed condenser water setpoints leave that benefit unused for much of the year. Resetting against wet bulb captures it, provided the chiller manufacturer's minimum lift is respected.

3. Sequence chillers on measured efficiency, not on hours run

Rotating machines purely to equalise runtime often loads a less efficient chiller while a better one idles. Sequencing on measured kW per tonne at the current load point uses the plant as it actually performs.

4. Fix the low delta-T problem

When return water arrives too cool, flow rises to meet the same load and pumping energy climbs while chillers run part loaded. Causes are usually coil fouling, valves passing, or three-port valves left in a system designed for two-port control.

5. Verify before and after

Without metered baseline data, savings claims are estimates. Permanent metering on the plant turns every subsequent change into a measurable decision.
